John H. Clegg House
507 North Vine Street

In 1900, J. F. Hart, proprietor of the Victoria Furniture Company, who was also an undertaker and licensed embalmer, commissioned architect Jules Leffland to design a home for him (Leffland Plan #803) which was then built on the north half of Lot 4, Block 58, where North Vine Street crosses West Stayton Avenue. Decorated from abundant architectural ornaments available at local lumber companies or from catalogs at the turn of the century, it is a celebration of late Victorian architectural style. Exterior architectural details include a one-story wrap around porch which rises to two stories above the entry, a four bay facade, chamfered and turned porch columns, and jig-sawn brackets and turned
spindles in the balustrade.

On July 2, 1906, E. J. Hogan sold the house to John Henry Clegg as a gift to his bride to be. Ten days later, Clegg and Lillian Roselle were married. The account of the wedding in the Victoria Advocate paints quite a picture of the event.
