Charles Fredrick Schneider House
307 North Craig Street

The Schneider cottage on Craig Street (formerly Guadalupe Street) was built by Charles Fredrick Schneider (1858-1924) around 1893. The land had been acquired by Schneider's father, J. H. Schneider, who came from Switzerland to the United States in 1851. The elder Schneider landed in Galveston, traveling to Indianola, and finally settling in Victoria.

The block of land on which the cottage is built was part of a number of town lots owned by J. H. Schneider, Sr., who obtained this particular piece of property in 1875 from the heirs of Frederick Grote. Before then, the land had passed through the hands of several owners and their heirs, including Victoria's first mayor, John J. Linn, who bought the lots on this block for $53.33 at a sale at the courthouse in 1847. Apparently, no home was on the property when Charles acquired the lot from his father.
