William H. Sutherland House

707 North Victoria Street

William Hughes Sutherland was a prominent merchant and stockman in Victoria. He pursued his career, built it up, and solidified it by 1900. The outward signs of his success were manifested in the construction of a large, stylish home in a prosperous and developing neighborhood in northern Victoria. The house was designed by Jules C. Leffland.

By 1908, Sutherland followed this pattern by removing his old home facing Moody Street and replacing it with a new home facing Stayton Avenue. As originally constructed, the Sutherland home was a simple derivation of the Prairie style developed by Frank Lloyd Wright around 1900. After it was moved and the porch was deleted, the house took on a more eclectic, vaguely Neoclassical appearance.

You can learn more about this home and the families that have lived here in Volume I of Historic Homes of Victoria, available here online through our SHOP or at the Victoria Preservation, Inc. office.
