John C. Sigmund House
508 East Santa Rosa Street

On Santa Rosa Street, the John C. Sigmund House reached its 115th birthday in 2017. It has been an attractive focal point, lovingly maintained by three generations of the family. It is a familiar landmark and is truly one of Victoria’s architectural masterpieces—a late Victorian cottage.

John C. Sigmund was born in Matagorda County on July 4, 1859. His parents, Louis and Elizabeth Eidebach Sigmund, were natives of Germany. During his boyhood, the family moved inland to Cuero where John continued to reside until his marriage to Caroline Meyer in 1883. Caroline was a native of Victoria, born the same year as John. John was noted as a member of Fire Company #1 in 1883 and a highly esteemed building contractor for many years.
In 1902, John built a new home for himself and his wife at 508 East Santa Rosa Street. It is not surprising that the house is so well built; he was building it for himself, and he certainly had the experience and the desire to do a first class job.
